I was just watching the news, ABC 7 here in VA – and found myself shocked, appalled and horrified by what I saw, what a so called Dentist was doing to children….

I watched in horror as they performed a root canal on little Migeul (A 4 year old terrified little boy). They strapped him down to a papoose board to perform his dental procedure. One of the nurses told him that if he did not “straiten up” that he would get the bad doctor, and then they pinched his little nose to get him to “open up” because he was so hysterical that he could not.

Going to the dentist for the first time is scary for ANY child, it should be handled with patience and compassion. Apparently not at Small Smiles – or at least not the one’s here in the NOVA area! (Oh and on a side note, from what several friends have told me, in many area’s Small Smiles IS the ONLY dentist that they can take there child who is on Medicare, so it’s not even like some parents even have a choice!)

The news report talked of patient “conversions” and contest and bonuses along with the Dr.’s flippant attitude – all made it seem like Small Smiles puts profit WAY before its patients.

I know that many of the children treated at these centers come in with serious dental problems and I understand that any business needs to make money. But at what expense? Having children so traumatized by their experience that they never want to visit the dentist again? And most importantly, if the staff of Small Smiles is doing nothing wrong, as Dr. Williams claims, why did they lie about “federal regulations” that prevent the parent from being present when their child is having a procedure done? Saying that “…parents are back, roaming around all over the clinic. It is a violation” is ridiculous. Dr. Williams, and the other dentist, are simply taking advantage of people who don’t know better.

Please take some time to read the story, Small Smiles, and please know that no matter what dentist you decide to take your child to, it is NOT against ANY regulation – you CAN and SHOULD go with your child!
