Breast CancerI know I for one had never heard of Inflammatory Breast Cancer – Breast Cancer yes, but Inflammatory Breast Cancer – never!

I knew that staggering statistic – 1 in 8 woman will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer

I also knew that – 1 woman in 33 diagnosed with Breast Cancer will die from it.

But now, thanks to WhyMommy I know different – and you should too!

The IBC lists the symptoms of Inflammatory Breast Cancer as:

  • Swelling, usually sudden, sometimes a cup size in a few days

  • Itching
  • Pink, red, or dark colored area (called erythema) sometimes with texture similar to the skin of an orange (called peau d’orange)
  • Ridges and thickened areas of the skin
  • What appears to be a bruise that does not go away
  • Nipple retraction
  • Nipple discharge, may or may not be bloody
  • Breast is warm to the touch
  • Breast pain (from a constant ache to stabbing pains)
  • Change in color and texture of the areola

Now let me just say – that sounds ALOT like Mastitis (which is a breast infection you can get from a clogged milk duct, and usually get while nursing).

As a nursing mom, that’s SCARY!

WhyMommy writes, “Inflammatory breast cancer is often misdiagnosed as mastitis because many doctors have never seen it before and consider it rare. “Rare” or not, there are over 100,000 women in the U.S. with this cancer right now; only half will survive five years.”

And this… “Inflammatory breast cancer is the most aggressive form of breast cancer out there, and early detection is critical. It’s not usually detected by mammogram. It does not usually present with a lump.”

Please see your doctor if you have any of the symptoms listed above – it very well could save your life!
