Mei Tai Baby CarrierBabies need a lot of attention, we all know that, but did you know there’s an easy way to have your baby with your all day, hands free. Just imagine, being able to cook, clean, shop, and play with your other children all while your baby is safely snuggled up against you in a carrier. I am here to tell you, you really can do all that and more, by using a technique that has been used for centuries, the natural art of wearing your baby.

Most, if not all, people have seen the large backpack carriers, and even things like the baby Bjorn – which are readily available at large retail stores. But, did you know that there are LOTS of different ways that babies can be worn? Using lots of different positions, and fabrics?

There are so many different types of these baby carriers, which you can get. The kind of carrier you want really depends on how you want to carry your baby. There are tons of different choices; so it’s best to do your research before you decide which kind of carrier you might want. (It’s also nice to try out a couple brands if you can before you buy too. Often your local Attachment group or the local La Leche League group will be able to help with that. Or you might be able to find a local retailer – if you’re in Northern Virginia, email or give me a call, I would be happy to help.)

  • Most babies cry less when they’re being worn in a carrier up to 50% less. This is because they’re always close to mom and/or dad. They’re also constantly getting new images to process and understand, so they’re less bored.
  • The constantly changing stimuli when being carried help stimulate your baby’s brain and promote neural development.
  • Babies who are worn in baby carriers by their moms and dads tend to form stronger bond with them, quicker; this is because they always have a feeling of being safe and secure.
  • Being able to feel moms and/or dads heart beat and body functions helps the baby’s biorhythms develop faster. This means they get on a schedule faster and easier.

Using a baby carrier is not only great for your baby; it’s great for you too.

  • Wearing your child gives you the comfort of having them there with the convenience of being able to use both your arms.
  • With many baby carriers, you have the ability to breastfeed your child without using your hands.
  • You don’t have to haul around an annoying stroller or car seat when you’re out, the baby carrier is very light and can fit in any diaper bag.
  • You get a great weight-bearing workout from carrying the extra weight.
  • Being with your baby all the time helps you learn there normal cues, naturally (and quickly). So you can quickly anticipate when they’ll need to be fed, changed, or cuddled.

  • If you carry your baby on your hip or to one side, change sides and directions regularly so you don’t cause yourself back and hip problems.
  • Make sure you’re using a carrier that is appropriate for the age and weight of your child.
  • Using a doll or teddy bear, practice with any new baby carrier before you start carrying your child. This will help you become more familiar with the carrier, so you feel more confident when using it for the first time.
  • Don’t use your baby carrier while in the car; children need to be in an appropriate car seat.

If done safely and properly, wearing your baby in a carrier can be a great way to bond with them, comfort them, and get all your chores done all at the same time.

If you have any question’s don’t hesitate asking, I have been wearing babies for years, and making carriers for All Natural Mommies for the last 3 1/2 years. I would be thrilled to help in anyway I can!
